goodbye summer

Life has been so hectic this summer. I entered it dreading it because I had no idea what was to come. And now looking back I can see there is no way I could have predicted the events of the past month. How cryptic does that sound?? I wouldn't be able to start writing about everything, though, without suddenly sounding unbearably dear-Diaryish.

I've been on a bit of a rollercoaster, and it's been fun and it's been horrible but it has never been in between. And so, I am very very tired. Tomorrow, I start my last year of school and I go back into a routine. I will have more time to think, to just be. To not be caught in the act of doing, and to be able to process the moments that just zipped past. And in doing so, I will finally write and read and reflect and rest. Maybe I'll even write more and better blog posts? (Here's hoping).

The unwinding process begins. And for the first time in a long time I have time to just sit and waste an hour watching terrible TV. Isn't that wonderful?

draft

It would appear I am barely blogging at all. My personal dashboard, however, tells a very different story. Drafts and drafts, half written blog posts, a few downloaded photos framed by some bullet point notes. Waiting to be finished until they are no longer relevant.

My university application, too, all in draft form.

The assignment you see peaking between the lined paper and keyboard: still in theoretical form.

My summer plans: a vague outline, ready to shift at any moment.

Things are slowly crawling towards a close, but they are still unfinished. Tomorrow, the final year of my childhood begins.

And yet my future is still all in draft form.

diary

Oh my god, I have SO much to write about. But two nights ago I got four hours of broken sleep due to some idiotic time-keeping (no, really. I was operating four hours ahead of real time for over an hour before realising that the reason it's dark is because it's THREE THIRTY AT NIGHT).

I think I am still recovering. Over the past two days I have been thinking and doing some very strange things... among them I can include eating chocolate, which I haven't done in over three years; switching political allegiances, at the polling station (don't worry though; never Tory); altering my opinion on who I like and who I don't (I know technically it should be 'whom' but that just sounds pretentious).

But, anyway, yesterday I moved my bedtime forward to 9PM and today it's 10 so I'm obviously not very good at this timekeeping stuff. I had better be off, which makes this post something I haven't done in a while! Since September according to my archives. An 'off to bed post'.

For those of you who haven't read them before, click here to read the cringeingly bad series of posts written, as you can probably guess from their name, just before I went to sleep. I refuse to delete them, even though I know for my own pride's sake, I should.

sleep

Update: you'll never guess what happened today! My bed broke! I'd cry if it wasn't so hilariously ironic...

Part of me feels far too young right now. I feel like a little girl, and I'm not old enough to be in the age and place I am.

The other part of me still hasn't recovered from a weekend of very little sleep last weekend.

This time last week I was drinking coffee to keep me awake for the 12 hours of no sleep I had ahead of me. Treating night like day, we filled the dark with light so that we would still be able to see.Seven days later, you'd think I'd have recovered. But this weekend, I have slept more hours than I have been awake. I have slept long into the morning, mid-morning, closing my eyes against the light.

I still feel tired. That makes me feel incredibly old.

lace face

I think this is the latest OR earliest I have ever posted on here.

Anyway, I am off in approximately 8 hours so I better get some sleep in now. I just thought I should let y'all know that I haven't gone AWOL - on the contrary this trip has been planned for 364 days. I didn't want to leave a seal of approval as my last post, that would seem quite ironic, as abandoning one's blog doesn't seem very approval-worthy.

Damn. There is a hole in my gorgeous new lace tights. I hope that isn't a sign for the way the rest of the day will go.

some pictures and words

BACK. Back from

Long lazy days in a tent which turn into long lazy nights in a tent

Trying to work off some of that laziness with power walks along the coast

Stomping across a pebbled beach is not dissimilar to half an hour on an elliptical trainer at high intensity (only with better scenery)

Then lying on the pebbles for hours, getting sunburn without noticing because of the strong wind which makes you feel cold not hot

Reading books bought at a local secondhand bookstore. One for 75p, 25p cheaper than the price on the back cover. The other in pristine condition (at time of purchase; the front cover is of course now bent and permanently creased), half the original price

Being on a constant search for the next meal

That might mean a greasy fish and chips shop, a quaint tearoom or maybe an attempt to collect some berries at a P.Y.O

Before giving up and picking a couple of the best punnets from the farm shop

BACK. Back to

Toilets where you can touch the door handle without fear of picking up a fatal disease.

Internet. TV. Overload.

A bath and clean hair.

Bed.

off to bed; goodbye July

I am absolutely cream crackered, as they say in Cockney Rhyming Slang.

I am so sorry for my more than slightly intermittent posting.

I am even more sorry, probably more for me than for you, dear readers (I could not presume that it were upsetting to you if I posted less; only that I know it upsets me), because I cannot see August's post count improving particularly.

I am barely at home right now, but that ends next week (yay!) with the end of my temporary work.

I am, after that, going to not be at home at all, apart from a brief weekend during which

I am particularly excited about going to see the new Time Traveler's Wife movie.

I am guilty for the fact that I have scheduled no posts for these internet breaks, as I did last year when I was a much better blogger.

I am not sure that even in September will my post count be even better, as I will be thrust into newness and hard work.

I am feeling even more cream crackered just thinking about all this.

I am off to bed; goodbye July.

Edit: I left this reply on Zmaga's blog, which I thought might be a useful addition to this post. Sorry for my vagueness last night, what can I say; my mind works much more lucidly on 13 hours of sleep:

And don't worry; I was only saying goodbye July, and that my posting will continue intermittently as it is right now; you haven't got rid of me quite yet.

adjustments

life is more different than even i imagined working full-time in london. by that i mean, everything is different.

travelling is a whole different species. a hot, crowded, rush to the last carriage if you want any hope of a seat, rush-hour species. you see the same guy in the same carriage with the same piercing blue eyes twice, because now your travelling is regular.

the weather is different. i am permanently cold at my desk by the air-con, and shivering in the streets at lunch-time in the lashing rain with my broken but easy to carry umbrella. the weather forecast becomes all important.

90% of my wardrobe looks at me, neglected and forlorn. after a couple of weeks of heavy wear as i do little more than lazing around, my casual clothes slump sadly. the previously insignificant holes in my cardigans and fallen hems now scream for a needle and thread. black ballerinas replace bronze birkenstocks.

even boredom is different. now it is about twiddling thumbs, frequent visits to the water machine and toilet. i have progressed in my current book by hundreds of pages. what can i say; the internet is blocked.

long, long hours. i work throughout, interesting work, not too hard nor too easy nor too titillating. but work which consumes time. as hours slip through my fingers, i find only room enough for short pauses. i find myself making lists, lists, more lists, to tick off as soon as i get a chance to breath a full, long breathe. i have probably spent enough time making to-do lists to have completed ten lists.

eating habits, drinking habits, walking habits, exercising habits, sleeping habits, tv watching habits. none of them have escaped unscathed.

i am two days in. 23 to go (including 1.93 days of entitlement to paid holiday).

hello @ 22.37

Well I am off now for a relatively early night. It is ridiculous how I so often notice how much better I feel on lots of sleep, yet I still insist on staying up late. I decided not to go out tonight, which is good as at about ten o'clock I realised OH MY GOD I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR TOMORROW!!!

The skirt I was going to wear is too short.

The dress I could wear had an unravelled hem. Too late to start sewing.

Another dress was too pretty to wear on the first day.

(I didn't ever say I was being particularly rational, people).

I have no see-through tights (and black would be too hot) so I don't want to wear any of my dresses.

An old pair of black trousers, too small. An even older pair of black trousers, too big.

You get the picture. Eventually, my wonder-mother brought out a pair of grey trousers she bought quite recently so are not too big on me, and as they are the more current skinny cut can easily be folded up to combat my short legs problem. Yes they are a little wintery but they are also awesome and mean that I can wear my stripy blue shirt. I'm thinking I might have to do some travelling in my lunch break and buy some tights. Then Wednesday I'll probably venture even further afield after work to buy a whole new wardrobe. Because I have NOTHING TO WEAR.

tired

I only want to curl up inside my bed and re-immerse myself in the many worlds of the trilogy I am racing through at a highly intellectual level. Until then, I must drink endless cups of tea to keep myself fixed in this present place. My shoulders droop and my body feels heavy. I cannot even contemplate the idea of getting a textbook out and doing the revision I had intended to. I have worked all day. I sink into the bath and slowly lift my arms, using my last reserves of energy to clean and wash and condition my long hair, and repeat. By the time I am out of the bath it is only 9PM and I am far too tired to do anything but go to bed.

stationary

I'm off on my jollies very soon now, and have just finished packing. I was especially uninspired in writing a post about 'finding beauty everywhere' (as I am meant to be doing on this blog) today after seeing that for the next week I shall be wearing old jeans or tracksuits, fleece gloves, walking boots and, wait for it, a hat with earflaps and a pom-pom.

I have decided not to lug around my precious but rather awkward camera. I am a little sad about that since there will definitely be some stunning photo opportunities - for which my camera phone and a Kodak disposible will have to suffice.

So as a goodbye to the camera I took some photos of this cool little rubber. Symbolic on many levels, no?

post-it updates

I realised today that, instead of having nothing to write about... I have way too much to write about.
  • Today was the end of an era; an era of acrylic jumpers, trousers with broken zips, holey trainers, painful pumps, shapeless shirts with buttons missing and my daily uniform for the past five years.
  • Today I realised it's time to get fit for summer. I'll be upping the exercise routine big-time. Yay?
  • Today I discovered that I still fit into a vintage white dress from several summers ago. So what, it squashes my boobs a little? It still looks pretty sexy.
  • Today I wore my new home-made haircut. My hair feels a lot lighter.
It feels a little wasteful, squishing the potential for a handful of posts into one. But I'm in a decadent mood. Enjoy.

Off to bed posts

Do you remember my Sunday night off to bed posts? Yeah, they kind of petered out. Anyway, the point was that perhaps posting late, just as my mind was beginning to shut down, might result in some more natural writing. If that didn't happen, then it never failed to be amusing.

But last night, if the off to bed posts were still happening, it would have clocked in at approximately 8PM. I was that tired. Originally, my friend and I had planned to watch the Oscars into the early hours, but that didn't happen. And now I have to resort to youtube clips; I just love the Oscars!

So this is meant to be some sort of explanation for recent lack of posting - I am dog-tired. Normal service should resume Wednesday. Please keep with me.

And on that note, who stopped following my blog?? I would be personally offended if I wasn't still half asleeep!

Therapeutic?

Oddly enough, following my recent ramble about losing my shopping mojo, I began to become much more eager to shop. In the past two days, I have accumulated not one, not two but three fantastic new purchases, and I cannot help but wonder if writing it all down helped.

Of course, fit shop assistants are always helpful, but perhaps that post did have some therapeutic properties... anyway, a more detailed (and pictured) analysis to come...

......

Today one of my friends told me I'd be a shit psychologist, counseller or any type of caring person. She said that I'd be a good diva-ish actress, or evil journalist but nobody she'd want caring for her.

How does this make you feel?

Note: maybe I shouldn't blog (or comment on other blogs...) when I'm tired. Anyway, this is a photo I took just over a year ago at an art event in Turkey. The theme was 'war'. I thought it was quite apt but I'm not entirely sure why.

I don't like Mondays...

Do you find that you just can't bear certain days of the week?

My day is Tuesday. It drags by painfully and laboriously. It's a little odd, considering that I was born on a Tuesday, and it's my adopted middle name. But there are so many things wrong with Tuesdays, that I have begun to find something rather difficult about Mondays; knowing that the day to follow will be unpleasant.

But there is an upside. The next day is Wednesday!

One thing I love about Wednesdays is that they single that the week is drawing to a close. You can begin to wind down and look forward to the approaching weekend. Classes on Wednesdays are relaxed and enjoyable. Wednesdays are also the day of my running club, an event which always leaves me exhilarated. Today, being a Wednesday, my energy levels were running particularly high as I rushed around ... at one point I tripped over some stairs and I now have a rather sore bruise - but it doesn't matter because I took out two books from the library which I've been wanting to read for a long time.

Another highlight of Wednesdays, at least of this one and the coming three weeks, is a great new drama I have just watched on Channel4 - The Devil's Whore. The English Civil War is a period of History which I haven't looked at for quite a few years, so it was good to have a refresher of this important event. But what really stood out for me is the character of Angelica Fanshawe who, however fictional, really resonated with me as a remarkable character. She reminded me of the type of woman who would inspire a WendyB of jewelry.

So that's another thing to add to Wonderful Wednesdays. It almost seems a shame to bid today goodbye, knowing that it will not return for another seven whole days.

(perhaps you have noticed that the 'off to bed posts' have really petered out as of late; I thought a Wednesday post would be better than no post at all, even if it wasn't on the customary Sunday. Anyway I don't like Sundays... they precede Monday, which precedes Tuesday)

The best of times...

Sometimes when I sit down to write, I have no ideas whatsoever and a couple of days of filler posts pass before something amusing or interesting strikes me. Other times, I’m in a wallowing, self-pitying mood and long, incoherent rambles stream across the page where I write a lot without saying very much at all. This evening, as I begin this post (I’m exhausted, but also energised and want to start it off although I know I won’t finish it) I have what seems like a million things to write about.

But I always try to make sure (although I’m sure I often fail) that this blog doesn’t fall into the ‘dear Diary’ trap which can be extremely self-satisfying but not particularly interesting for anyone else, or even very stimulating for me. So I try to find a way in which whatever is on my mind links into something a little more clever, a little less pointless. Naturally, weaving together several different strands of exciting events to one intellectual and consistent idea is far harder than what I normally do and with several other compulsory pieces of writing to do, it’s not the highest of priorities.

I could take the several things I want to talk about, and split them up into several posts, but the excitement about these things often quickly fades and next week there will be something else. Isn’t it odd how the best of experiences can so rapidly become a vaguely pleasant memory in moments of doubt, boredom, anger, or even in the regular hum-drum events of daily life?

The danger of thinking this way is that you devalue the importance great times, which I don’t think I’d ever want to do. So tomorrow I’m going to take the time, in between a timed essay, some coursework and a review I have to write, to share the fleeting but beautiful things which have been making me happy these past few days. And now, I’m going to have a much needed good night’s sleep.

Detective Pretty Face Returns

I've just finished watching a scary movie with a friend and now I'm alone in an empty house. I don't want to go to sleep quite yet, and so I've turned to thinking about how long it's been since I last wrote an 'off-to-bed' post. I think this one must be some sort of late record; it's 13 minutes past midnight at the time of writing this sentence. I don't normally feel like blogging when I'm having a late night which may explain that.

But I'm not sure I'm ready to sleep just yet!

Anyway - so we watched Saw. I was quite proud of myself whenever I figured something out ahead of time, in a smug sort of way. Although it's probably just an indicator of spending too much time watching CSI.

Another thing which struck me was Cary Elwes' grand decline. When I saw that he starred, I got super-excited, expecting to see this:

I was instead greeted with this (he's on the left):

There's something odd about scary movies; they can have the power to scare you, render you incapable of turning out the lights and going to bed. But sometimes, they just make you laugh. I couldn't keep a straight face at the end of Psycho (and no, I wasn't screaming...)

Comfort Reading

I know that every ounce of my blues right now is utterly down to hormones and I have not one single reason to feel at all down. Nevertheless, I can't remember smiling this evening and as a smiley person I am worried.... comfort eating never seems to work...

Having just finished a rather depressing book, and yesterday embarking upon the fun-fest that is Anna Karenina, today I reached out for some comfort reading. I know that what with all the wonderful wonderful stuff out there I should really be continuing to build my reading foundations, therefore I should not waste time re-reading yet, and if I were to then re-reading Harry and the Wrinklies is not the book to choose, not being mind-nourishing, intellect-building yada yada yada. But I'm really looking forward to going to bed and starting this book for the 100000th time.

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Hello @ 21.21

I have to apologise for being a truly unfaithful blogger. Around midday today, I got back from a moderated hiking expedition; I passed! I suppose that therefore the lack of posting yesterday and this morning is perfectly excusable, but I got home ridiculously early (did the hike this morning in a crazy 3 hours, without breaking at all! yay! I suppose it compensates for the 1 hour 'detour' we managed to take yesterday) and instead of resting, unpacking and writing, I immediately went back out for a spot of much needed retail therapy.

-Now of course I am completely and utterly cream crackered, and have not even written the history essay I was planning to. I think at a certain point it's simply impossible to get work done so I've resigned myself to those rambling off-to-bed posts which used to be semi-regular. Having said that, this is a Sunday night, as they were originally planned to be!

-What did I buy today? Surprisingly, no clothes. Thankfully, the sun came out for our trip, as did my cream trousers and summery florals in the hope of a last-ditch attempt at dressing for summer. This means that there weren't actually any clothes I was compelled towards; too sunny for the winter clothes my mind has already switched to.

-Anyway. Stopping off at Selfridges, I bought two books. One classic which I've been wanting to read for years and am planning to read alongside a group of friends next month: Anna Karenina (Tolstoy) and another which I simply couldn't resist for the adorable front cover and wonderful name. My favourite French word is pamplemousse.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Madame-Pamplemousse-Her-Incredible-Edibles/sim/0747592314/2
I like to think that my reading diet is well-balanced and varied. I also spent forever with a fantastic book about costumes in Hollywood (I think it's this one), all the way from the start of film history to Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. I don't know why, but these things fascinate me so much. In general, I'm not a big fan of 'coffee-table books', finding them obscenely expensive and collectery. Does that make sense? At the till there was an obscenely rich buying I think three of these so-called coffee-table books, totalling around £150 which they paid in cash. Nosy, moi? I'm not even going to go into the hideously tacky ensemble of one of the lucky ladies for fear of sounding like a total bitch

-Apart from the books, most of it was pretty menial purchases; some nail polish remover because I am fed up of not being able to remove the two-week old paint on my nails, a lovely new fountain pen (to write my masterpiece..) and a sports bra to wear on my first ever proper run in a couple of days. Right...

-Ooh and I got my glasses adjusted and can now happily wear them. Phew! I was worried that there would be a sad ending to the spectacular story for a couple of days there. So, the moral of this post? Tiredness breeds intense materialism which is actually incredibly uplifting and helpful in forgetting about an unwritten history essay.
